Connecting Microsoft Teams
The Microsoft Teams integration lets your employees receive visitor arrival and departure notifications directly in Teams, in addition to or instead of email and SMS notifications. This guide covers both the Anghello-side connection and the Microsoft-side deployment, to be carried out with your IT department.
Audience: Anghello Administrators + Microsoft 365 Administrator (IT)
Application: Admin (app.anghello.co)
Estimated time: 20 minutes
Prerequisites
- An Administrator account on Anghello
- The Teams add-on included in your Anghello subscription
- A Microsoft account with the Global Administrator role on your Microsoft Entra ID tenant — required to grant consent (a standard user account, even an Anghello administrator, is not enough)
- Employees with a Microsoft 365 license that includes Teams
- Your employees' email addresses in Anghello must match their Microsoft 365 accounts (see Account matching)
How the integration works
This section is for your IT department, who will need to review and grant the permissions.
- Anghello sends Teams activity feed notifications through the Microsoft Graph API. This is not a conversational bot: the integration doesn't post in your channels or chats, and doesn't read any message, file, or calendar.
- The connection relies on a Microsoft Entra ID admin consent, granted once for your entire tenant.
- Anghello stores no Microsoft credentials or passwords. Only the technical information strictly needed for the connection (tenant ID, access tokens) is kept securely.

Permissions requested at consent time (application permissions):
Permission | How Anghello uses it |
|---|---|
| Send the activity notification to the employee concerned |
| Find the employee's Microsoft account from their email address |
Note: The
User.Read.Allpermission will soon be replaced by the more restrictiveUser.ReadBasic.All(basic profile only: name, email, ID), which covers exactly what Anghello needs. Already-connected integrations will keep working with no action on your part.
Step 1: Connect Anghello to your Microsoft tenant
- Open the Integrations page
From your Anghello portal, go to the Teams configuration page.

- Click Connect
Click the Connect Microsoft Teams button. You'll be redirected to the Microsoft sign-in page.
- Authorize the connection
A Microsoft window opens. Sign in with your Microsoft 365 Administrator account for your tenant. Microsoft displays the organization consent screen, listing the permissions described above.
- Connection confirmed
Click Accept. You're brought back to Anghello with the message Microsoft Teams has been successfully linked to your organization. and the status changes to Connected (green badge). Your Anghello organization is now connected to Teams.
Step 2: Deploy the Anghello app in Teams
This step is done in Microsoft's Teams admin center, by your IT department.
Important: This step is not optional. A notification can only be delivered to an employee if the Anghello app is installed in their Teams client. Without it, notifications will fail even when the connection is active.
For your employees to receive notifications in Teams, the Anghello app must be installed:
- Download the app package
On Anghello's Microsoft Teams page, in the Resources card, click Download Teams. You get a .zip file (the Anghello app package for Teams).
- Upload the app to your tenant
In the Teams admin center: Teams apps > Manage apps > Actions > Upload new app, then select the .zip file.
- Allow the app
Check that the Anghello app shows the ✅ Allowed status. If it's blocked, click the app and change the status → Allow. If your organization uses app permission policies, make sure Anghello is allowed for the employees concerned.
- Install the app for your employees
4.1. Method 1 (recommended): automatic deployment via a setup policy
To avoid having every employee install the app manually:
- Open the Teams admin center
- Go to
Teams apps>Setup policies - Edit the global policy (or the policy applied to your host employees)
- In the
Installed appssection, clickAdd appsand selectAnghello - Save: the app will install automatically for all users concerned, with no action on their part
4.2. Method 2: manual installation by each user
Each employee can install the app themselves:
- Open Microsoft Teams
- Click
Appsin the sidebar - Open the
Built for your orgsection (or search for "Anghello" in the search bar) - Select
Anghello, then clickAdd
No need to pin the app in the Teams sidebar (pinned apps in the policy): Anghello notifications arrive in the employee's activity feed, like any other Teams notification. Pinning the app adds nothing and clutters your employees' sidebar — installing it is enough.
Step 3: Enable the Teams channel in notifications
Being Connected isn't enough: you must enable Teams as a notification channel in Anghello:
- At the site level: in your site settings,
Notificationstab, check that arrival/departure notifications are enabled and select theTeamschannel for the events you want (Visitor check-in,Visitor check-out). - At the employee level (optional): on the employee's record,
Notification preferences>Customize notification preferenceslets you choose their channels (Email,SMS,Teams) event by event. These individual preferences take precedence over the site's.
Step 4: Check that it works
- Check a test visitor in on your check-in kiosk, listing them as visiting an employee whose Teams channel is enabled.
- The employee receives a
<First name Last name> has arrivednotification in their Teams activity feed. - Clicking the notification takes them to the visit details, and — if visit approval is enabled on your site — directly to the approval screen.
Account matching
Anghello identifies the Teams recipient using the employee's email address entered in Anghello: it must match an account in your Microsoft 365 tenant (primary email address or UPN).
Common failure cases to check with your IT department:
- The Anghello email is an alias that doesn't match the primary Microsoft account
- The employee uses a different domain between Anghello and Microsoft 365 (multi-entity, subsidiaries)
- The Microsoft account is a guest account (external to the tenant)
In these cases, the Teams notification fails for that employee (the other channels, email and SMS, keep working normally).
Disconnecting Microsoft Teams
If you want to revoke the connection:
- On the Microsoft Teams page, click Disconnect.
- Confirm the disconnection.
Teams notifications stop immediately. Email notifications keep working normally.
Good to know
The Teams integration works alongside email notifications. Your employees receive notifications on both channels.
Troubleshooting
Problem | Solution |
|---|---|
| The Microsoft account used doesn't have the Global Administrator role, or consent was denied. Try again with a Global Administrator account for the tenant. |
| Contact us to add the Teams add-on to your plan. |
The status shows "Consent error" | Authorization was denied or has expired. Disconnect and reconnect the integration. |
Teams notifications don't arrive | Check that the Anghello app is installed in Teams and that notifications are enabled in the site settings. If you've just done the install, some delay may be needed. |
| Session expired (over 10 minutes) or a temporary error: restart the connection from Anghello. |
The Connect button doesn't appear | Only administrators can access this page. |
Why does the Anghello app need to connect to Microsoft Teams with permissions? | The Anghello app only requests permissions to look up an employee by their email address (to identify the visitor's host) and to send an automatic notification to their Teams activity feed when the visitor arrives. No Teams data (messages, files, channels) is read, stored, or analyzed by Anghello. Permissions are strictly limited to sending notifications and identifying the employees concerned. |
